The truth behind CAKE's 69% production cut: Why did PancakeSwap abandon V3 burning?

TechFlow Introduction: The Flip proposal recently published on the PancakeSwap governance forum has prompted the market to re-examine CAKE's value capture capability.

On the surface, the proposal creates deflationary expectations by cutting CAKE's daily output by 69%, but in the core fee distribution details, the protocol revenue from V3 liquidity pools is completely stripped out of the token burn mechanism and instead tilted in full toward liquidity providers (LPs) and the team treasury. Against the backdrop of intensifying multi-chain liquidity competition, PancakeSwap has chosen to sacrifice the token's underlying cash flow in a defensive posture to secure its market share in the DEX sector.

On October 14, the PancakeSwap core team (The Kitchen) formally submitted a tokenomics restructuring proposal called The Flip on the governance forum.

The key figure in the proposal is that the team plans to sharply reduce CAKE's daily emissions from 22,500 tokens to 7,000 tokens, a reduction of as much as 69%.

Looking at the supply side alone, this appears to be clearly bullish for the CAKE token. But beneath the surface of "output reduction," the proposal carries out a fundamental restructuring of the distribution mechanism for the protocol's real revenue (fees):

First, the fee share for liquidity providers (LPs) in V3 and Infinity pools will be raised across the board from the current roughly 66% to 88%; at the same time, the remaining 12% of protocol fees will be allocated entirely to the team treasury (Treasury).

This means that the V3 business, currently the main engine of PancakeSwap's trading volume, **will no longer use any fees directly for buying back and burning CAKE.** The official confirmation is that the future task of maintaining CAKE's net deflation will depend entirely on the legacy V2 protocol, which still retains a 23% burn mechanism.

In short, the essence of the proposal is that PancakeSwap allocates all revenue from its most profitable V3 business to market-making capital and the team, while using the static metric of "reducing new issuance" to replace the dynamic cash flow originally used to buy tokens on the secondary market.

Market Share Anxiety and the Red-Ocean Game of DEXs

Cutting off the token's value accrual from the core business stems from the extremely brutal competitive landscape and liquidity anxiety in the DEX sector today.

At a time when multi-chain capital is being diverted, although PancakeSwap still holds an absolute DEX share of about 76% on the BSC chain and maintains a massive trading volume of about $23.8 billion over the past 30 days, this base is facing severe challenges from multi-chain aggregators.

Under a market mechanism in which aggregators fully dominate trade routing, capital has no loyalty at all and will only flow to the pools with the lowest slippage and the best depth. If PancakeSwap cannot offer industry-leading yields to retain market-making capital (LPs), large capital will migrate to other networks. A cliff-like decline in market share and trading volume would be devastating for any DEX.

Therefore, ceding 88% of fees to LPs is not proactive ecosystem expansion by the protocol, but a defensive survival strategy forced into a corner. In the either-or choice between "preserving the platform's market share" and "maintaining the token's direct value," the proposal chose the former.

How to Price CAKE's "New Deflation"?

The implementation of The Flip proposal shows, to some extent, that in the highly involuted stock-game competition of DEXs, so-called "Real Yield" is first and foremost a tool used to court large capital (LPs) to maintain liquidity barriers, and only secondarily a profit stream that empowers the token.

For token holders, facing this shift in the underlying value capture logic, they need to readjust their pricing and holding strategies for CAKE.

First and most important, abandon the deflation illusion of "automatic price pumping."

In the past, massive trading volume meant considerable fee buybacks, and token holders could directly enjoy the dividends of protocol growth. Now, as V3 stops direct burning, the quality of CAKE's deflation has changed. "Scarcity" created merely by limiting new issuance, without real buying capital to absorb it, is very unlikely to independently drive the token price higher over the long term.

Since the official side is pinning its deflation hopes on V2, token holders must closely track subsequent data changes. If, after the proposal is implemented, massive LP incentives cause trading volume to accelerate its migration from V2 to V3, then CAKE's actual burn volume will face the risk of stalling.

The 12% of revenue retained in the team treasury under the proposal, as well as the 7,000 CAKE newly issued daily into the Pantry fund, are nominally used for ecosystem building and marketing. Token holders need to assess whether the team can use these funds to leverage ecosystem growth far exceeding the value of buybacks (such as the introduction of RWA assets, cross-chain deployment, etc.). If excess growth cannot be delivered, this is equivalent to a direct dilution of retail value.

In conclusion, in the current market, for most projects that still have real revenue, it is essential to demystify the phrase "reduce token supply."

Reducing supply does not equal a higher token price; in some cases, the token itself is not an income-generating asset that shares in protocol profits.
